This is our personal choice of where to stay in north-west and central Corfu, based on the hotels we’ve visited over the years and trying to give a good spread both geographically and pricewise.
In a wonderful setting on wooded slopes looking out over one of Paleokastrítsa’s beautiful bays (with a path leading down to the pebbled beach and watersports), the Akrotiri Beach makes a great base for a stay here. It’s only a short walk to the centre, but everything is on site for those lazy days: pools, restaurant, bar, tennis courts, shops.
A lovely setting in the little bay at Liapádes for this inexpensive and charming hotel, whose buildings are terraced into the hillside behind the beach. The Blue Princess Beach Resort has a very friendly feel, and as well as being right on the beach, it has both a seawater and a freshwater pool, two restaurants and indoors and outdoors bars. The 140 rooms are spread out among fairly low-rise bungalow buildings spread around the palm-filled grounds.
Select set of villas in a fabulous location about 4 km (2.5 miles) from Paleokastritsa and overlooking the Ropa Valley. Fundana Villas is a 17th-century Venetian mansion, once the home of an artist, has been tastefully converted into a mix of apartments, studios, bungalows, and suites. There’s also a small olive press museum incorporated into the villas, which offer guests a bar and a library too. The main strawberry-pink villa was used for filming the BBC TV series of Gerald Durrell’s My Family and Other Animals. A truly delightful place.
Easily one of the best located hotels on Corfu by a long way, the Golden Fox is built on a headland north of Paleokastritsa and provides breathtaking views. Family-owned, the place is a haven with studios and suites, most with the same stunning views (some have side views of the sea) plus fridge, TV and phone. There is also an excellent restaurant, with shops next door in the traditional village of Lakones.
Right by the viewpoint known as the Kaiser’s Throne in Pelekas, and sharing its magnificent views, the Levant Hotel is a romantic hideaway in a very peaceful location. The décor is old-fashioned and romantic too, but the facilities are fully modern – swimming pool, TV, direct-dial phones, the Sunset Restaurant, and a terrace making the most of those views.
Domes of Corfu is a magnificent classic-style luxury hotel, whose rooms also have the classical look and furniture. There are both suites and regular rooms, although even the regular rooms here are twice the size of most hotel rooms. The gardens are lovely, lush and colourful, leading down to the beach, and there are sports and watersports facilities too, and a choice of restaurants and bars.
Opened in 1980 in Liapades, this lovely block of rooms is well looked-after by its very friendly owners and staff. The Villa Papoulas has a decent-sized swimming pool with a large shaded snack-bar terrace, with palm trees and bright red geraniums adding to the cheery look. The rooms are a little small but all have wide balconies, and the price is remarkably cheap for the quality provided.
The ultimate in upmarket rural comfort, the Pelecas Country Club has its own heliport and stables for guests bringing their own horses. There are only a handful of rooms and suites, including a Presidential Suite, in 25 hectares (62 acres) of grounds filled with ancient olive trees. In fact some of the rooms in this 18th-century mansion are in the renovated olive press and other farm buildings. All are filled with antique furniture and have a private courtyard. Superb.
One of the most truly sumptuous rural properties on Corfu, the Villa de Loulia building dates from 1803. The rooms have been decorated to reflect the island’s grand historic elegance, and with only nine rooms and suites the hosts can offer little luxuries such as breakfast at any time, in the separate modern building where you will also find a bar and a lounge. There’s a pool too, surrounded by idyllic countryside. It’s located in Peroulades.

Here’s our very select list of where to stay in Southern Corfu. It’s just five places but we’ve only picked ones that we can personally recommend from staying in them. They include stylish resort hotels and tucked-away hidden gems, and we’ve tried to spread it around a little geographically.
The Sentido Apollo Palace Hotel in Messonghi in Southern Corfu
The Sentido Apollo Palace is an impressive and inexpensive option for the popular resort of Messonghi, its rooms mostly being in individual units spread around the large and lush gardens, almost like living in a little Greek village. It even has its own small church, but more conventional amenities too like swimming pools, bar, and restaurant. It’s also right by the beach, which is reached by a pleasant stroll through the grounds.
The Delfinia comprises three separate buildings all more or less facing the sea across trees and green lawns, and only five minutes from the centre of Moraïtika. There are a couple of pools, tennis courts, water sports at the beach, lots of indoor and outdoor activities for children, bars, and restaurants: in fact you hardly need leave the grounds.

You walk from the car park over a bridge that crosses a stream, which at night is filled with the sound of frogs… and a few ducks from a nearby house. It’s a modern property in which there are 22 very spacious rooms, 20 with sea views and balconies, and two more suites at the back, which are even bigger and with private terraces. It also has a bar, with breakfast served inside or on the front terrace.

Right on Irakleio’s main square, the Capsis remains quiet inside and offers stylish accommodation that is not too expensive. All the rooms are bright and modern with a predominantly blue décor and lots of wood furnishings. They all have plenty of closet space, TV, phone, mini-bar, air-conditioning and ensuite facilities (baths not showers). The rooftop pool is open till 10pm and has great views over the city.

The 5-star Aquila Atlantis is the best hotel in the centre of Irakleio, and though it has some 160 rooms and suites you would still be advised to book ahead in high season as it is popular with tour groups and business conferences. Close by the Archaeological Museum and only a short walk to most other city attractions, the Atlantis also has so many of its own facilities that you hardly need to leave it: gym, pool, laundry, bars, restaurant, shops, and even a rooftop garden.

Only 3 km (1.9 miles) west of the city centre but with a quick and regular bus service into Irakleio, the Candia Maris makes an ideal base if you want to explore the city but also enjoy the beach and all the other hotel facilities. These include fitness centre, tennis and squash courts, three swimming pools plus one for children, watersports, indoor games room, three restaurants and four bars. The rooms are spacious and bright, and the rates very reasonable for a deluxe hotel of this class.

The simple and inexpensive family-run Kronos Hotel is friendly and clean and right on the waterfront road. This does mean some traffic noise at night in the front rooms, but you do get the bonus of a sea view. That aside, it offers excellent value accommodation in the centre of town. Downstairs is a lounge that doubles as the breakfast room, and a bar with a soft drinks cabinet. The rooms are a good size and have everything needed for a few nights’ stay: balconies, phone, TV, wardrobes, ensuite facilities.

It was the apple pie that did it. We were staying at an Airbnb near Hania, which was self-catering. As we hadn’t had time to self-cater, the owner, an artist named Dimitris Vamvounakis, brought us two huge slices of the most delicious apple pie, flavoured with walnuts and cinnamon, and made by his wife. It meant that we could enjoy our breakfast coffee and have something to eat with it before venturing out to explore.

We sat on our apartment’s big patio, shaded by umbrellas, and looked down over olive groves towards the glinting waters of Souda Bay on the north coast of Crete. To the west was Hania, one of our favourite towns on the island, and all around there was plenty to explore, though it was a great temptation to just stay at Dimitri’s and chill out.

We did do that one morning, and Dimitri, who’s an artist, took us down below the house to show us his studio. It was a wonderful place, full of strikingly original and often whimsical art works: sculptures and paintings and mobiles, all evidence of an enquiring and playful imagination. He moved quickly around the rooms with great energy and enthusiasm, pointing out his various creations while telling us his life story too.

‘I was born in Athens,’ he said. ‘My grandfather had an olive press here in the house I live in. He went to Athens in the late 19th century. They came back with a flour mill. They bought the first shipwrecks from the Greek government for recycling.
‘I came back here from Athens. I was lucky to have the house and I renovated it in 2006. Not the rooms, only the gardens and this part below the house. I tried to do a tavern but I didn’t want that. I experimented in many ways to try to make an income. The most successful was inviting a group of people to dinner in my house, from 7pm to whenever, two courses, wine, lots of conversation and people liked that. But it wasn’t for me. I didn’t want to be a tavern man.’

Now he rents accommodation out on Airbnb and in winter also runs courses for children, as he’s passionate about the environment.
‘In winter I started to invite children to teach them about recycling. I take them to a car recycling place. If they’re lucky they get to smash a car! But it’s to teach them about recycling.’

‘If people stay for a week they’ll find food in the fridge, coffee, tea, honey, oil, fruit, bread. If they spend 90 euros a day on the accommodation then they get back 30 in food! It’s not tourism,’ he insisted, ‘it’s visitors.’

He stays open all year. There’s a swimming pool too, and in winter when people don’t want to use it he fills it with goldfish. Dimitri is a quirky man, totally charming with a warm heart, with the quirky eccentricity of the artistic mind.

But he is also business-like and the accommodation is very well-equipped. There was fresh coffee, filters, a coffee-maker, even a hair-dryer. As well as the basic foods to get you started, there was also orange juice and ouzo in the fridge. His wifi code is painted on the wall right inside the front door, and it’s also the same as his phone number.

On a table beneath the stairs is a pile of books, brochures and local information, like walks and where to eat. There’s nowhere to eat in Malaxiana itself, which has a population of 70-80, but plenty of options in villages nearby, or of course you can self-cater and the accommodation is very well-equipped for that. One Russian couple stayed there for 15 days, Dimitri told us – and we can see why.

The décor is rustic, with lots of wood, but brightened by the many colourful artistic touches. Downstairs is a comfy couch, a sitting and dining area, the kitchen and the bathroom with a shower. Upstairs is another sitting area (though we used it to unpack our suitcases) and beyond that a double bedroom. It’s simple but is clean and has everything you could want. The only drawback for us was having to trek downstairs to use the bathroom, but given the delightful time we had there that was a minor thing.

Dimitri was happy to share his life story with us, and all-in-all was an inspiring man. He seemed a little bemused by the way that life sometimes works out, and although there are bad times there are also good times to enjoy.

‘When I came here,’ he told us, ‘I was married but after five years my wife left. Later, when I was 43, and sitting in the tavern, this lady said to me: “I want you.” I said: “No, no!” She said “I want to marry you.” I said “No. no, you are too young!” She was 23. But now we have been married 16 years and have two children. I was 60 yesterday.’

The Bella Venezia Hotel in Corfu Town
Corfu Town is a lovely town and we highly recommend staying there for a few days when visiting Corfu, if you can. We once stayed there for two whole weeks while researching a guidebook and didn’t run out of things to do. We found great new places to eat every night we were there, from fancy restaurants to back-street souvlaki joints.
There’s an excellent range of hotels, too, and we moved between some of them during our visit, including some of the ones listed below. Here, then, is our list of suggestions on were to stay in Corfu Town, based on several visits.
A lovely shining curved wooden reception desk greets you as you enter the friendly Arcadion Hotel, which combines classical looks and history with modern comfort. The entrance is around the corner on Vlasopoulou, though the building looks out over Kapodistriou, the southern end of the Liston and the Spianada, an ideal location. Try to get one of the front rooms if you can, though the side ones looking out over the Old Town are also attractive.
The Hotel Arion is only a minute or so from the entrance to the Mon Repos estate, in the quiet, village-like suburb of Anemomylos. It’s a pleasant 15-minute walk around Garitsa Bay into the town centre, too. The Arion is a smart, modern hotel at a very reasonable price. It has 105 comfortable rooms, a large lounge/reception area and a big rooftop terrace with seating, a bar and wonderful sea views.
The Atlantis Hotel is conveniently placed near the port, if you’re arriving or leaving by ferry, and right on the edge of the old town too. Most of the rooms and suites have balconies and views over the Ionian Sea, and although it’s only a 2-star hotel and inexpensive, it is clean and friendly and all rooms have air-conditioning, TV, direct-dial phones and ensuite bathrooms.
The Bella Venezia is in a neo-classical mansion, once a girl’s high school, and it oozes the kind of character that many hotels these days lack. Rooms are large with high ceilings, breakfast is in a garden pergola, and it is only a short walk down to Town Hall Square.
The Hotel Bretagne is a budget but very comfortable option for those with late or early flights, as it is within walking distance of the airport. This proximity does mean that airport noise at other times can be a problem, so bring your ear-plugs. It is modern and cheerful and has its own bar and restaurant… which are also well worth knowing about if you have airport delays.
Everybody in Corfu Town knows the Cavalieri Hotel, as in summer its rooftop bar is one of the places to have a drink. It’s rather a plush place in a 17th-century mansion, and though some of the 50 rooms are small it does have class and character. All rooms have balconies, with the front ones offering lovely views of the sea and the New Fortress.
This 4-star hotel is out on the Kanoni peninsula, a 5-minute drive from the airport. Despite being about 3 kms (1.9 miles) from the town centre, and 1.5 kms (0.9 miles) from the beach at Mon Repos, it still proves immensely popular with people looking for an all-inclusive resort-style hotel, where every facility is available. It has luxury rooms and suites, and its two conference centres also make it a top business choice.
The Corfu Holiday Palace is a huge complex with a few hundred rooms, suites and bungalows, conference facilities, and the island’s only casino. Located out on the Kanoni peninsula, it overlooks Mouse Island, one of the best views in Corfu.
The swishest hotel in Corfu Town itself, in the 5-star Luxury class Hotel Corfu Palace, overlooking Garitsa Bay. It’s where visiting politicians and other dignitaries are usually housed. It has a beauty and fitness centre, two swimming pools, two restaurants, large well-kept grounds and all its rooms and suites overlook the sea.
Built in 1862 the Konstantinoupolis oozes old-world elegance, with marble steps and a spiral wooden staircase leading you up to the rooms (and an old-fashioned elevator too). It’s handy for Old Port and Old Town alike, and though some of the rooms are small they are charming, with bright blue tiled baths. The breakfast room is also bright and cheerful, and there’s 24-hour room service too. Don’t let the 2-star rating mislead you, it’s exceptionally good.
The Mon Repos Palace is a very attractive adults-only resort-style hotel with 114 rooms, all of them having TV, air-conditioning, phone, fridge, and balconies. It’s at the southern end of Garitsa Bay, very close to the Mon Repos estate and an enjoyable 10-minute walk around the bay into Corfu Town. It has its own small plunge pool and sunbathing terrace, but is right by the Mon Repos beach too.
Keramos Studios in Zaros on Crete is an inexpensive two-star hotel/guesthouse with one of the best breakfasts on the island using food from the family’s farm.

We’d visited Zaros in Crete several years earlier while researching a guidebook. We didn’t have time to stay there while we did our Rouvas Gorge Walk, but we had time to look around the small village (population about 3,000) and found it a really interesting and charming place. We were determined to return, and eventually got the chance, but this time to stay overnight.

Zaros could hardly be more central on Crete. Just look at Google’s map. It’s about an hour’s drive south-west of Irakleio, just under two hours’ drive south-east from Rethymnon, and about half an hour from Matala and Phaistos on the south coast. If you have a car, Zaros would make a great place to be based.

Keramos Studios was easy to find, in the centre of the small village, and there was plenty of parking nearby. Though they call themselves ‘studios’, it’s a combination of guesthouse and 2-star hotel. If you think two stars doesn’t seem much, don’t worry.

While the accommodation is simple, it’s super-clean, has everything you need, the family which runs it are incredibly friendly and helpful, and the room rates are remarkably cheap. We thought it was excellent value for money and would go back like a shot.

Our room was on one of the upper floors, and there’s a very old-fashioned elevator, which we loved. Our room key was a very old-looking and enormous metal key – yes, a real key! We had a large and comfy double bed, kitchenette (which we didn’t need), an en suite bathroom, a big wooden wardrobe, and a lovely traditional feel to it. We also had a balcony where we could sit and gaze out at the mountains.

By the time breakfast came round, we couldn’t believe it after the feast at Vergera but we were actually hungry again. It was just as well as we’ve never been served such a breakfast spread. It didn’t surprise us when we discovered that the woman who makes the breakfasts fresh every morning is Katerina, the aunt of Vee-Vee who runs Vergera. Cooking and generosity obviously run in the family.

Katerina’s baking is her speciality and she starts very early in the morning in the Keramos kitchen. As well as making bread, she makes about twenty different pies, and between us we managed to sample fifteen of them (I counted)! The waiter just kept on bringing them. He more we praised them, the more he brought.

They included banana pies, several different types of cheese pie, zucchini and mint pies, marmalade pies, raisin pies, milk pies, spinach pies, pumpkin pies with honey and nuts in them, two kinds of chocolate pie, one baked and one fried – eat them with honey, the waiter told us. Chocolate with honey? Yes, it was brilliant.
And as if this wasn’t enough, we were also told to tuck into the buffet of cold meats, cheese, tomatoes, yoghourt, and honey. We admit we did take a small plate, just to keep him happy. Finally, when we assumed we’d finished, he bought us each an omelette. A chip omelette.

Katerina’s son, Mikalis, runs the family farm and at Keramos Studios you can book a farm tour, so of course we did one before leaving Zaros. There are three types of tour available, and we did the basic tour as that’s all the time we had.

You can also add a cheese- and bread-making class, or go for the luxury option which adds an outing to gather wild herbs and going back to the farm and making pies with them. You might also join in wine-making, raki-making, or making olive oil, depending on the season.

Our farm tour was wonderful. We were accompanied by Mikalis’s two young daughters, who helped introduce us to all the animals. The chickens had chicks that were a few days old, and one of the goats had a tiny kid with it, which Mikalis picked up and brought over to us. There was a horse, too, and rabbits, pigs with little ones suckling, and donkeys.

Afterwards we went back to the farmhouse where Katerina was baking bread, then started frying chips and eggs, cutting cheese, and we were treated to a lovely lunch with everything from the farm: tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, peaches, bread, cheese, and of course eggs and chips. Oh, and a little raki. It was delicious and delightful. We highly recommend it, and the Keramos Studios in Zaros. It’s more than just somewhere to stay, it’s a very Greek family experience.

S. Nikolis Hotel in Rhodes Old Town
If you want to know where to stay in Rhodes Town, the capital of Rhodes, then you have two main choices. Do you want to stay in the Old Town, close to all the main historic attractions, or do you want to stay in the New Town, and be closer to shopping, bars and other modern amenities?
Accommodation in the Old Town is usually more atmospheric and characterful, but it may mean stairs to climb with luggage because there are no lifts, and quirky arrangements. The New Town is where you tend to find the more comfortable and more modern hotels, with a short walk to the Old Town.

Best Western Plaza Hotel
Best Western Plaza Hotel in Rhodes New Town
This 4-star hotel has 136 comfortable rooms with luxury fittings, and the breakfast buffet is outstanding. It has an outdoor pool, a sauna, a cocktail bar, and a restaurant. It’s in the New Town but only about a 10-minute walk from the Old Town.
A pleasant, family-run hotel with character, and the owners speak English, Italian, French, and Greek. The Anastasia is located in a leafy garden area off one of the main streets, a 10-minute walk from the Old Town. The rooms are simple but are bright and sunny and have high ceilings. They also have fridges and air-conditioning, and are all non-smoking. There’s an outside breakfast area beneath a lovely hibiscus canopy.
Note that the hotel is at number 46 on 28 Oktovriou Street. The Greek practice is to put the street name first and then the number of the house.
This 500-year-old former Turkish sultan’s house has been turned into a delightful and remarkably inexpensive little hotel in a quiet residential street in the Old Town. It’s worth booking well ahead as the old atmosphere has been retained and there are only 11 rooms. There’s a roof terrace with views of the medieval walls and across the Aegean to Turkey.

For the ultimate Old Town experience, this splendid 15th-century building in the old Turkish quarter is the place for style and flair, with surviving Ottoman features adding to the ambience. The hotel has a 3-star rating and has an acclaimed restaurant too, as well as a peaceful garden.
A big roof terrace with superb views over the Old Town is a bonus at this reasonably-priced option in a quiet area inside the medieval city walls. This is open from May to October and is where they serve breakfast, drinks, snacks, and light meals.

This boutique hotel is in a handsome Old Town building in a hidden corner, and we love it. The house was built around 1300 AD, and became a hotel in 1980. Its wonderful ambience includes an inner courtyard with a resident tortoise. A selection of very different types of room is available, and most of them have great character. Excellent facilities, too, and the roof garden offers guests breakfast with a view.
